Cardinal Industries is a manufacturer of games located in Long Island, New York. The company has been in business for over 50 years and is still making new games. For Mah Jongg fans, name Cardinal is a familiar one, as the company was big in Mah Jongg business back in the old days. These days, the Cardinal Industries web site doesn't even mention Mah Jongg!

So, when you're looking for a Cardinal set, you're talking about vintage. There's precious little information available in the internet, but it seems they manufactured Mah Jongg sets in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's. The Cardinal sets are mostly Catalin, but I've also seen a really cheap wooden set for sale.

The sets are Western style, with Arabic numerals and letters on wind tiles. The Dragon tiles are also westernized, featuring actual dragons instead of Chinese calligraphy. The amount of flowers and jokers depend on the age of the set, but as most are pre-1971, there are no jokers for American-style Mah Jongg. However, many vintage sets come with necessary joker stickers already fixed on the tiles so you can use them for American Mah Jongg.
